Exemptions: If all lap/shoulder seat belts are being used by other children, then a child over 40 pounds may ride in a lap only seat belt without a child restraint. (Booster seats cannot be safely used with a lap only seat belt.) Additional exemptions include vehicles such as:
Many parents are surprised to learn that safety belts generally do not fit children until they are between 8 and 12 years of age. Until that time, children who have outgrown a cars seat with a harness are safest in a booster seat. Remember, car seats and booster seats are designed to protect children and make them comfortable at the same time. There's nothing comfortable about a too-big safety belt cutting into a child's stomach or pressing against his face. Plus, kids who ride on booster seats can easily see many things they would otherwise miss.
Permanent Fitting Stations are places where parents / care-givers can make an appointment to have their child safety seat inspected by a trained child passenger safety technician.
The Automotive Safety Program has established a network of Permanent Fitting Stations where parents / care-givers can have their child safety seat inspected by a trained child passenger safety technician. The most current information is given to the participant and instruction on how to properly install the child safety seat.
Permanent Fitting Stations are located in approximately 122 locations across Indiana. The Jefferson County Health Department houses Jefferson County's permanent Fitting Station: 715 Green Road, Madison, IN 47250
Making an appointment is easy, simply call 812-273-1942 and ask to speak to a child passenger safety technician. Appointments are made for Wednesday mornings from 8 a.m. to Noon.
The Buckle-Up Bug Club of Jefferson County travels to all Jefferson County Elementary schools each year to teach safety and to Buckle-Up. We target the Kindergarten students in each school and have a short lesson, a game, and goodies. We also have a costumed character that is involved with the learning experience and children learn about Buckling-Up and remember the Big Bug.
The Indiana Buckle-Up Bug Club is designed for students grades K to 3, but appeals to children of all ages. The Club is available statewide and is aimed at increasing seat belt use among children. Enrollment in the club requires members to wear their own seat belt on every trip and bestows the right to "bug" everyone in their family vehicle to buckle up. It is a great way to encourage the development of the lifesaving habit of always buckling up.
